Walters Homes Survey Finds Buying Beats Renting
BARNEGAT, N.J., July 25, 2012 – The majority of townhouse owners at Whispering Hills indicate that buying is a smart investment versus renting in today’s market, according to the results of a survey conducted by Walters Homes. The eco-friendly community is part of a planned development located off Rose Hill Road, between Barnegat Boulevard and Route 9.
The Walters Homes survey determined that 87.5 percent of respondents agreed that buying a home is the best long-term investment. The survey involved an equal number of previous homeowners and first-time buyers. Top factors influencing the decision to buy a new Whispering Hills townhome, according to 56 percent of respondents were home ownership and location, followed by the price of units. Other key factors included schools and jobs.
“There are several factors that make buying a more affordable option today,” said Pamela Schuster, sales and marketing manager for Walters Homes. “Steady housing prices, historically low mortgage interest rates, and rising rents are just a few. Whispering Hills offers an ideal combination of value, generous living space, and an ideal location at the Jersey Shore.”
Value was among the top reasons for choosing a Walters Home with 81.2 percent of respondents, followed by 43.7 percent who chose both location and energy efficiency as important reasons in their purchase. FACTORS INFLUENCING TOWNHOUSE PURCHASE
The survey also asked, “What was the most important factor influencing your decision to purchase a townhouse at Whispering Hills?” Among the respondents was Joe and Jeannie Platero who noted, “Very affordable pricing for a brand new construction” as an influencing factor.
Patricia Yardley added that, “quality and spaciousness at a reasonable price” were the reasons she bought the Meadow at Whispering Hills. When the long-time New Jersey resident retired, she tried living in Florida but decided to move back to be near family. “If you’re renting, you’re just wasting your money,” she said. “I have over 2,500 square feet with a finished basement for under $300,000. And I have a walk-out basement with lots of windows, so it’s like having a huge den.”
The survey also revealed that the features that appealed most to townhome owners were living space and basements. The majority, 81.2 percent, indicated living space, and 68.7 percent preferred full basements. Whispering Hills townhomes offer from 1,909 square feet to 2,191 square feet of living space, and include full basements.
Among the top amenities that influenced one-third of homeowners to purchase a townhome was the community’s wooded environment. The project encompasses a 28-acre tree preservation area, adding value to the community and contributing to the overall health of the ecosystem. The development also sits adjacent to the Barnegat Branch Rail Trail Bikeway, a 15.6-mile former rail line extending from Barnegat Township to Toms River.
